Gut Microbiome and Our Health

Why is our gut microbiome important?

Gut microbiomes are all those bacteria, viruses and micro-organisms that live in our gut and they dictate our health.

How is our gut microbiome related to our health?

There are many studies suggesting and showing that the microbiome can make us sick if there is not enough of them or they are not in good health, or they can help restoring our health if maintained well.

Moreover, many studies have shown that the brain is affected by the gut microbiome and vice a versa.

i.e. during school examinations we feel “stomach” sick or nauseas, when we need to perform in front of a crowd, we might feel we are going to vomit, or after a lot of mental exertion we might feel hungry, etc. etc.

Who is in charge of our health?

This is clear evidence that our mental state affects our gut microbiomes at least acutely.

If we are in a chronic state of mind like sadness, depression, etc., then we can expect that our microbiome gut will be affected as well, but in a chronic state.

By falling into chronic states, we might expect reduction in the number of gut microbiomes or decreasing in the health of our gut microbiomes.

You are in charge, you can make the difference.

Think simple, if you are rushing you might not eat the proper foods as you don’t have time to prepare. You also might be eating in a rush, something that is not in favor of what the body requires. In the other hand, if you are sad, tired, etc. you might not be willing even to eat.

Therefore, if we don’t maintain our gut microbiome in check, we might expect diseases to develop.

This is a vicious circle connecting the mind and the gut.

The importance of Omega 3 and Omega 6

Why is Omega 3 important?

Omega 3 acts as an anti inflammatory agent, and also helps the mobility of all the cells in the body by acting as a lubricant.

Omega 3 is one of the polyunsaturated fats that are essential to our health. Other polyunsaturated fats are omega 6, omega 9 and more.

Omega 3 has two main components; the EPA and the DHA.

Researchers agree that it is most beneficial to introduce to our diet the omega 3 with both the EPA and the DHA components together and not separately.

How is the EPA and the DHA in Omega 3 made?

Our diet needs to include some omega 6. Omega 6 will be essential for the production of omega 3.

The omega 6 fatty acid, when in the liver, will get elongated with more carbon molecules. This new molecule will be elongated again, in he liver, to become EPA.

The liver will metabolize the EPA and then DHA will be created.

Studies found that DHA does not convert to EPA.

Where in the body we can find EPA and DHA?

The brain and the retina are rich in DHA, but these organs do not contain EPA.

Anywhere in the body we can find the EPA that will help us with many bodily functions.

Where can we get healthy sources of Omega 6?

We can find omega 6 in various whole foods and oils, i.e., Sunflower, safflower, soybean, corn, and more.

In order to reduce the oils costs, these oils became less pure comparing to their quality of many years ago, and as such be used by the food industry in all the aspects of producing packaged foods and cooking in restaurants.

I use whole foods containing omega 6, for instance sunflower seeds, avocado, walnuts and such, peanut butter, eggs and many more. I do not recommend using the oils mentioned above.

Where can we get healthy sources of Omega 3?

There is plenty of omega 3 in wild caught fish like sardines, salmon, cod liver, herring and other fatty fish.

Other good sources are cashews, almonds, walnut, chia, flaxseeds and many more.

Examples of diseases that Omega 3 can prevent or assist in curing.

Triglycerides – May lower the level with increasing EPA.

EPA reduces inflammation by creating a molecule by the name resolvents. In one example, EPA can help with arthritis disease by reducing the inflammation and therefore reducing the pain.

When EPA goes into the membranes, it improves the fluidity and therefore the metabolism will run smoothly.

Our neurons must be lubricated at all times. This is the basic consideration to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

EPA can control the heart rate.

Bleeding – EPA makes the platelets not to be too sticky and therefore clogs might be prevented. This will result in prevention of heart attacks.

Pulmonary diseases, overall improve the immune system and more.

Treating Lung Diseases with Homeopathic Remedies

Homeopathic treatment for lung diseases is the gentlest and at the same time the most efficient approach without causing any side effects or addiction to the remedies. As soon as the person feels better, there is no need to continue taking the remedy. There are many remedies that will help with the lung diseases and a few will be addressed in this article.

Aconitum Napellus

Is one of the of the famous remedies, which is indicated when the person is in fear of dying and believes that it will happen now. It is for inflammatory conditions, especially those of the respiratory organs, and acute inflammations of all the organs and tissues. The early stages of inflammations of serous membranes, pleuritis, pneumonia, tonsillitis, catarrh and bronchitis. Constriction and anxious oppression of the chest, with difficulty of breathing. Asthma of attack of suffocation, with anxiety. Sensation of heaviness and of compression at the chest. Painful pricking in the chest, chiefly when breathing, coughing, and moving (even the arms). Stitches through the chest and side, especially when breathing and coughing.

Arsenicum Album

Is indicated for people whose mental restlessness is accompanied by physical weakness to move, cannot rest in any place, changes places continually, lies now here and now there. In Arsenicum Album the person is anxious and fears death but cannot predict the time it will happen. He thinks that it is useless to take medicine, as the condition is incurable and is surely going to cause death. In Arsenicum there is a tendency to drink water frequently but in very small amounts. The respiration is shorth and at night it is harder to breath producing asthma attacks. The person wants for fresh air to help the breathing but he cannot breath.

Nux Vomica

According to Dr. Dewey, Nux vomica is a useful remedy when the asthmatic attacks are brought on by gastric disturbances; simple spasmodic asthmas; there is some relief by belching, the person must loosen the clothing. It must also be thought of in those who drink much coffee or liquor. Irritable bilious temperaments also correspond to this remedy. Zingiber is also a remedy for asthma of gastric origin, and the attacks come on toward morning; the person must sit up but there is no anxiety.

Antimonium tartaricum [Ant-t]

According to Dr. Dewey, this remedy is used largely in some form by the allopathic school in asthma, and it is homoeopathic to certain cases. The great keynote for the remedy is the presence of fine mucous rales throughout the chest, finer and smaller rales than are found under Ipecac. With this remedy the chest seems full of phlegm, with inability to expectorate it. There is great dyspnoea, the patient must sit up, and there are suffocative attacks coming about three o’clock in the morning. Like Ipecac, too, there is great difficulty in the expiratory effort. Antimonium tartaricum is especially adapted to the extremes of life, suiting the asthmatic attacks of the aged and the dyspnoea of the young children when due to pulmonary affections. A characteristic of the remedy is that there is a sensation that the person cannot get enough air.

As you can appreciate, there are many more remedies and each one might have a unique characteristic that matches your state of mind at present time. Therefore, it is important to consult with the team of SAGE Homeopathy to understand who you are in particular and what causes you to have the lung issues

Lung Diseases and Nutrition

The nervous system is directly connected to the gut and to the immune system; that is why issues affecting one system will also affect the others. In cases of lung disorders, it is important to support the gut and the immune system as well.

Eating a whole food diet can help you deal with your lung illness. Your diet should include plenty of vegetables, especially those rich in B vitamins (leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, carrots, sweet potatoes, etc.), fruits (bananas, citrus, avocado, etc.), whole grains, legumes (beans, lentils, peas, chickpeas, etc.), nuts and seeds (sunflower seeds, macadamia nuts, almonds, etc.) and sea vegetables. If you are not vegetarian, good sources of B12 vitamins are grass-fed beef and lamb, wild-caught cold-water fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines, etc.), chicken and turkey, eggs, yogurt, etc. If you are vegetarian, nutritional yeast is probably the single best source of all B vitamins but you may also need to take a supplement.

At the same time, you should eliminate consumption of sugars, processed foods, hydrogenated oils, and foods that cause you allergies.

It is also important to supplement with omega 3 fish oil and probiotics. Some adaptogenic herbs, such as ashwagandha, are also very helpful when dealing with issues like anxiety and depression as a consequence of your lung disease. Vitamin C and magnesium may also be beneficial. There are many other supplements that can help depending on the disorder.

Lifestyle changes are usually required in order to reduce stress and anxiety. For example, deep breathing exercises can help reduce anxiety and taking a walk in nature can do wonders to improve your mood and help you relax.

At Sage homeopathy we can also provide you with nutritional advice and help you make the right choices for your body and your mind.
